On October 15 we changed how a shop connects its Shopify store to Sinan. We already wrote about the new install screen. This post is about what happens around it: what you see when you come back from Shopify, what happens when a connection attempt doesn't work, and the two mistakes we fixed the day after we shipped.
Why this had to change
Until October 15, the way Sinan connected to Shopify only worked for our own stores. We could run Sinan on our own shop, but a merchant's store couldn't connect. Sinan is built for small online shops, and many of them run on Shopify, so this was the first thing to fix.
What connecting looks like now
- In the app, open Connectors and choose Shopify.
- Sinan sends you to Shopify's own screen for your store. You decide there, on Shopify's page, not on one of ours.
- When you come back, the app tells you whether the connection worked.
The last step sounds small, but it matters. A connection you can't see is one you can't rely on. If the app says it worked, you know Sinan is connected to your store. If it says it didn't, you know right away, and you don't have to guess or wait until a customer asks about an order to find out.
When a connection attempt fails
If an attempt to connect fails, we now see it on our side too. That means we can follow up with you, so you don't have to be the one who notices, writes to us and explains what went wrong.
We are a small, founder-led company. We would much rather find out from our own records that a connection failed than lose a shop owner who tried once, saw it didn't work and gave up on a quiet evening.
Two mistakes, fixed the next day
The first version had two mistakes in it. We fixed both on October 16, one day after it shipped. We could have said nothing, but a page that only lists what went well is hard to trust.
If you tried to connect your store on October 15 and something looked wrong, please try again from Connectors. If it still doesn't work, we'll see the failed attempt on our side and can follow up.
What Sinan can do once it's connected, and what it can't
Connecting your store gives Sinan access to it. That access is kept encrypted.
Access is not permission to act alone. Any change Sinan proposes in your store still waits for your tap. That's the same rule Sinan follows everywhere: anything that can't be undone, like a refund or a cancellation, waits for you. Sinan prepares it and you decide. Sinan never acts alone on things like that, and connecting Shopify doesn't change that.
That's why connecting is worth it, not something to worry about. Sinan can answer your customers using what's really in your store, and the decisions that cost money or can't be undone stay with you.
What to do now
- If you already use Sinan and run a Shopify store: open Connectors, choose Shopify and follow Shopify's screen. When you come back, check what the app says.
- If you tried before October 16: try once more. Both mistakes from the first version are fixed.
- If you don't use Sinan yet and run a Shopify shop: write to us. We'd like to hear how your customers reach you today.
We'll keep writing here when something changes in how Sinan works with your store, including when something goes wrong.
